Makoko Floating Fishing Village

Makoko is a fishing community which is found on the coast of Lagos with an estimated population of 85.000 to 100.000 inhabitants. One third of the houses are built on stilts along the lagoon, while the rest is constructed on the mainland. The main population of the inhabitants consists of the Egun people who are known fishermen. The flowing village consists of a network of waterways and has its own shops, schools and bars. It is governed by a local chief.

The settlement has existed since the nineteenth century and is under threat as already over 3.000 people have lost their homes after their houses were demolished by order of the local government.
For your tour you will meet with our guide who will join you by taxi to Makoko where you will enter in a dug-out canoe. We will visit the floating school, show you how fish is smoked and your guide will tell you everything you need to know about the settlement.
