Four day cultural and natural heritage exploration in the heart of Nigeria

Osun is a state in south-western Nigeria with the capital Osogbo and home to several famous landmarks. On this trip we’ll go on a three-day adventure in which we’ll go on a cultural and nature exploration.

We’ll start our trip in Lagos and will drive to Idanre Hill. Idanre Hill (Oke Idanre) is located in Idanre Town in Ondo, in the south-west of Nigeria. The landscape of Indanre Hill is well-known among Nigerians and besides the fantastic views the area has a wide variety of cultural and archeological sites. It has been added to the UNESCO world heritage site list and has since then gained in popularity. The hill is 914 meters above sea level and houses a unique ecosystem in which we can find the remains of the ancient city. A visit to the hill is a full day of discovery filled with breathtaking views, cultural and archeological exploration and a great exercise as it’s quite the hike! Tonight we’ll stay in town and the morning after we’ll head towards Erin Ijesha Waterfalls, also called ‘Olumirin Waterfalls’.

Erin Ijesha is a seven-step waterfall located in the heart of Osun State. The name means ‘Elephant of Ijesha’. On the top of the climb we can find the spring with the surrounding ancient Abake village. There are seven different falls with each one offering a different kind of beauty and experience. It’s a beautiful hike through the mountains and you’re surrounded by enormous tall trees. It will take us between one and two hours to reach the village on top.

In the afternoon we’ll go to Ikogosi Warm Springs. The Ikogosi Warm Springs are located at Ikogosi town. Besides the warm spring there is also another cold spring and the two eventually meet each other, providing the perfect temperature of 37 degrees for anyone who wants to bathe. This is very unique as it is a huge coincidence these two springs find each other.  Tonight we’ll sleep in the resort which is planted in the middle of beautiful lush green vegetation and nice gardens to walk around.

On our third day we’ll go on a visit to a few locations such as the Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove, along the banks of the Osun River just outside the city of Osogbo. The sacred forest was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005. We’ll visit the remaining stops of worship and have a stroll near the river.
Further on our way we will visit IIe Oodua: the Palace of the Ooni of Ife, the ancestral home of the King of Ife. We’ll have a guided tour in which we’ll admire the architecture and the artwork and learn more about the history of the Yoruba for whom this is a sacred place. We will also have a visit to the Moremi Statue of Liberty in Ile Ife, the tallest statue in Nigeria. It was built in honour of Queen Moremi Ajasoro. A heroine who saved her people from the snare of oppressors and helped them win the battle against their enemies.

We will continue our way to Ibadan, where we’ll have dinner and stay for the night. The following morning we’ll take a small tour in the city center and then will drive back to Lagos.
