Gangirwal or Chappal Waddi with 2,419 metres is the highest mountain in Nigeria and is located in the Gashaka-Gumti National Park on the border with Cameroon.
Most of the area is made of montane grasslands, used by cattle herders to have their cow graze, and the occasional pocket of forest where we can find a wide variety of birds, butterflies and smaller mammals.
You can combine your trip to the mountain with your visit to Gashaka-Gumti National Park, which is 6 to 7 hours away. It’s also possible to drive from Abuja, but be prepared for a long 13 hour drive, meaning we’d have to leave Abuja as early as 5 am. Once we arrive at the nearest village it takes two days of walking to the summit. We do this at a comfortable pace, allowing us enough time to enjoy the surroundings and to enjoy camping, cooking and chatting by the campfire. It takes another day to descend and we also calculate one buffer day, totalling in six days.
The best time to visit is between December and March during the dry season, but you can visit the park during the rainy season as well if you are ok with some mud and can deal with the car maybe being stuck. Please bring adequate clothing, hiking shoes, enough socks, mosquito repellent, mosquito net, sunglasses, sunscreen, some basic medication, a torch and make sure all your equipment is charged or can be charged through a power bank/batteries. Always count enough time for PCR-testing before your flights and expect the unexpected.
